Some days don’t need a ballroom. They need a ridgeline, a bit of wind in the hair, and a sky that doesn’t stop being impressive. Jed and Josh chose the mountains, and the mountains showed up.

The Day

This wasn’t a wedding with a timeline. It was a wedding with a direction up, out, and into the open. We spent the morning moving through the backcountry, stopping where the light hit right, not where a schedule told us to. No second guesses, no “are we on time for the next thing?” Just the two of them, the terrain, and whatever the day gave us.

The helicopter changed the whole game. Once we were in the air, the landscape stopped being a backdrop and became the subject. You see the scale of it the valleys, the ridgelines, the way the light moves across a slope in real time. From up there, the ceremony spot below looked exactly like it should: small, intentional, and surrounded by something that didn’t care if you were there or not. That indifference is what makes it work.

The ceremony itself was short and unscripted. No aisle, no seating chart, no “please turn off your phones.” Just the two of them, the officiant, and a view that didn’t need a single floral arrangement to feel complete. The kind of moment where you forget you’re holding a camera for a second and then remember, and the photo is better for it.

What I love about an elopement like this is the absence of performance. There’s no audience to play for, no “okay everyone, look this way.” The photos are just… them. Mid-laugh, mid-breath, mid-sentence. The mountains do the styling.

What Made It Work

– The location did the work. You don’t decorate a mountain range.

– The helicopter unlocked angles that don’t exist on the ground. Wide context, dramatic scale, and a completely different relationship to the landscape.

– The pacing was free. No schedule meant we could wait for light, wait for a moment, wait for the wind to die down. The photos are better for the patience.

– The scale. When the backdrop is that big, even a tight portrait carries weight. You feel the place in every frame.

– The two of them. Elopements only work when the couple is actually comfortable being themselves. These two were.
